The connection between Gamma-ray bursts and Supernovae Ib/c
Context. It has been established that Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) are connected to Supernovae (SNe) explosions of Type Ib/c. Aims. We intend to test whether the hypothesis of Type Ib/c SNe from different massive progenitors can reproduce the local GRB rate as well as the GRB rate as a function of redshift. We aim to predict the GRB rate at very high redshift under different assumptions about galaxy...
متن کاملLow luminosity type II + Ib , c supernovae ?
A combined sample has been constructed of supernovae of types II or Ib,c in our Galaxy and in external galaxies nearer than 4 Mpc. It is concluded that the luminosity function remains relatively flat down toMV = -13 to -14. Supernova rates obtained from traditional extraglactic samples should probably be increased by a factor of 1.5 2. A relatively simple observational programme could yield mor...
متن کاملCircumstellar Interaction around Type Ib/c Supernovae and the Grb Connection
Radio observations of Type Ib/c supernovae suggest that circumstellar interaction takes place with a wide range of wind densities, comparable to that seen in Galactic Wolf-Rayet stars. Efficient production of magnetic field in the shocked region is needed. The X-ray emission observed from some Type Ib/c supernovae is higher than would be expected by the thermal or inverse Compton mechanisms; a ...
متن کاملType Ib/c Supernovae and Their Relation to Binary Stars 1
The present understanding of type Ib/c supernovae and their connection to interacting binaries is reviewed. The problems of the classiication and the lack of well-observed events exclude direct inference of progenitor characteristics. The absence of hydrogen lines in the observed spectrum, nevertheless, requires restricted evolutionary schemes to produce suitable progenitor stars for core colla...
متن کاملType Ia Supernovae and Remnant Neutron Stars
On the basis of the current observational evidence, we put forward the case that the merger of two CO white dwarfs produces both a Type Ia supernova explosion and a stellar remnant, the latter in the form of a magnetar. The estimated occurrence rates raise the possibility that many, if not most, SNe Ia might result from white dwarf mergers.
